OVERVIEW OF THE EASTERN CAPE

The Eastern Cape is the fourth most populated province in South Africa, according to the latest Census 2022 results. The total population of the Eastern Cape as counted in Census 2022 increased by 10, 2% from 6,5 million more than a decade ago in Census 2011 to 7,2 million in the latest population census. Over 85% of the population in the province is black African, 7.6% is coloured, 5.6% is white and Indian/Asian comprises less than half a percentage of the population in the province. The largest concentration of population in the province was in the O.R Tambo district, with 1 501 702 people followed by the Nelson Mandela Bay with 1 190 496 people. The dependency ratio relates the number of children (0-14. years old) and older persons (65 years or over) to the working-age population (15-64 years old).
