The 2018 Algoa FM Big Walk for cancer which was presented by the Eastern Cape Department of Health (ECDoH) recorded a crowd of 13 239 participants who painted the Summerstrand beachfront in Port Elizabeth pink on Saturday the 27 October 2018.
Participants from as far as Aliwal North took part in this prestigious event in support of their family members and friends who are affected by cancer. They were also able to personalise their support for those affected by cancer by writing the people they were walking for on their walk numbers.
Among the dignitaries who participated in the walk were the MEC for Health Ms Helen Sauls-August, MEC for Social Development and Special Programmes, Dr Phumza Dyantyi and the Executive Mayor for Nelson Mandela Metro Municipality, Honourable Mongameli Bobani
The MEC for Health, Honourable Helen Sauls-August said there is an increase on cancer incidence and people are diagnosed. She encouraged people to do screening for early detection, diagnosis and treatment. The MEC further encouraged people to lead healthy lifestyles and get tested for lifestyle diseases.
As part of the build-up to the walk, the ECDoH held activation events where health screenings, testing and education was offered to the communities of Somerset East, Cradock and Fort Beufort.
During these build-up events, about 2000 people were tested for diabetes, hypertension, HIV/AIDS, Cancer screening, child immunisations, family planning and minor ailments.
The Big walk for Cancer which is held annually is one of the biggest charity and its proceeds support non-profit cancer organisations in the province.
The beneficiary for the 2018 Big Walk for Cancer is Cancer Association of South Africa and the funds raised will go towards the purchase of a FotoFinder Mole Analyser.
