In 2018 South Africa marks the centenary of the life of Mama Albertina Sisulu. The Minister of Communication, Nomvula Mokonyane together with Chris Hani Municipality celebrated the Endurance and Resilience of Albertina Sisulu during the years of apartheid in Cofimvaba Hospital. Albertina Sisulu dedicated her life to the struggle to liberate the people of her country to a free and democratic country that honors basic human rights.
In the spirit of Thuma Mina, the Minister saw it fit that the centenary be celebrated at Cofimvaba Hospital to honor the life of a struggle icon where she comes from. Mama Sisulu was a professional nurse, looking after her own siblings and took care of their health as she made herself to be an advanced young African child through education. In ensuring that the struggle heritage and her legacy still lives on, the Minister is working with different departments to make Cofimvaba Hospital one of the hospitals that will be a legacy life of Albertina Sisulu. In doing so she said, refining access to quality health care as one of the important priorities, improvement of the hospital infrastructure with the private sector committing to the upgrade of Telecommunication systems in the hospital, and 15 television screens to different wards, particularly the children’s ward and maternity ward.
Speaking to the masses she said “we must never tire from telling her story and continue her legacy especially the people of the Eastern Cape.” She further urged the people of Cofimvaba to be proud of her and own her. The Minister applauded nurses, doctors and other health care professionals in the hospital for their continuous good work. She rededicating them to take responsibility, commit to serve through innovation, desire for patient care satisfaction and improved high quality health care services in honour of Albertina Sisulu.
