Question 1:
Why is the hospital being decommissioned and changed into a public healthcare facility?
Shortly after opening the Nkqubela Tuberculosis (TB) Hospital’s new XDR-TB Unit which accommodates 60 patients (30 males and 30 females), the Eastern Cape Government began a process of relocating patients from the nearby Fort Grey TB Hospital to Nkqubela TB Hospital.
As he officially received and opened the completed section (Phase 1) of the new Cecelia Makiwane Hospital (CMH) on the 4th February 2016, the Eastern Cape Premier, Honourable Phumulo Masualle referred to the facility as a sight in the “world to come”.
ECDoH has to do within a tight fiscal space. Whilst healthcare undoubtedly remains one of the key priorities for the Eastern Cape Government, it is no secret that the current fiscal environment remains extremely tight and fragile with uncertain economic prospects.
Donating a unit of this “precious gift of life” can save up to three lives of those patients in dire need of blood. By becoming a regular blood donor, this ensures that the safety of blood is maintained and makes it possible for the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) to collect sufficient safe blood to meet the demand. More importantly, it’s a gratification in knowing that you help save lives.
